Known for his work fronting the enigmatic rock band Pedro the Lion, David Bazan’s emotionally charged narratives, eye for telling detail, and mournful voice have more in common with J.D. Salinger's "Nine Stories" or Flannery O'Connor's "Wise Blood" than with the usual lyrical slant of popular music. Bazan is a gifted storyteller, weaving parables of spiritual conflict, suburban ennui, and personal surrender into magnetic, well-crafted songs.
Bazan’s solo debut EP fewer moving parts finds the beloved Seattle songwriter roaring back to his creative roots, performing and recording everything himself in his home studio, while still expanding his sonic canvas. His signature songwriting, voice, and melodies are framed in layered harmonies, multi-tracked guitars, analog keyboards, and intricate production. The 10-song EP presents five new Bazan songs, each recorded in both stripped-down acoustic and full instrumentation forms.
Bazan is currently on tour opening for Ben Gibbard and plans to hit the road again this fall for a headlining tour of the US. After wrapping up the tour, Bazan will head into the studio where we will begin work on a new full-length record, tentatively scheduled for an early 2008 release.
David Bazan was at the Sasquatch festival this past weekend, and he got asked some questions by the A.V. Club read his hilarious responses here. |
The concept: gather together a bunch of bands in a house that will be destroyed. All bands play one song each, and perform their song twice, and then the house is destroyed. Capture everything on film, and release it on DVD.
For the Seattle edition, Death Cab's Ben Gibbard gathered together a bunch of great local bands: The Long Winters, Jesse Sykes, David Bazan, Harvey Danger, Tiny Vipers, The Cave Singers, Minus The Bear, Eddie Vedder, Kinski, Spook The Horse, The Can't See, The Blue Scholars, Triumph of Lethargy Skinned To Death, and, of course, himself. Released by Trixie DVD, but available here while supplies last. |
David Bazan will be touring the US this fall, starting in early September (Minneapolis, MN), and ending in mid-November (Newport, KY), with openers Casiotone for the Painfully Alone in the first half, and All Smiles for the second half. Pre-sale for tickets starts today visit the official ticket pre-sale site here.

If you've been wondering when your favorite Barsuk band is going to be coming around to your neck of the woods again, wait no longer. A dizzying number of tour dates have just been announced, including Nada Surf's US tour in October, Menomena's third big tour of the year (this time with Illinois in October and November), David Bazan's epic journey (with support Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, September through November), Rocky Votolato (playing some dates with Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter) in September and October, John Vanderslice (celebrating his new album, emerald city) and Smoosh (supporting Bloc Party in September). Check out our shows page for more details. |
Hip (and totally awesome) website, Stereogum, has put together a 10th anniversary tribute to the Radiohead classic, ok computer, with contributions from two Barsuk artists. John Vanderslice takes on karma police (which has, as John puts it, "the best bridge ever"), and David Bazan performs his interpretation of the song let down, a favorite at his live shows. Other artists on the tribute include Cold War Kids, Mobius Band, My Brightest Diamond, and more you can listen and read all about it here. |
The Barsuk release of David Bazan's debut solo EP is now available in the shop (official release date is May 22). You can also download a free MP3 from the album to get a taste for David's amazing songwriting and singing. |
Barsuk Records is honored to announce that we have added David Bazan to our roster. We will be releasing the fewer moving parts EP (originally released in a very limited way by Bazan himself in June of last year) on May 22, 2007. We have tentatively scheduled a full-length release of new material for early 2008. |
