Death Cab for Cutie will be performing at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards, airing live on VH1 on January 15th at 9pm (EST/PST). The band will perform a cover of the classic Simple Minds song, don't you (forget about me) from the classic film, The Breakfast Club during a tribute to filmmaker John Hughes. |
Death Cab for Cutie's the open door ep, a companion to 2008's full-length, narrow stairs, has been nominated for a Grammy in the Best Alternative Album category. Barsuk is excited to announce the 180-gram vinyl version of this award-worthy EP, which features 4 non-album tracks plus a demo version of talking bird. D Tour is an award-winning feature-length documentary that chronicles Pat Spurgeon's (from Rogue Wave) search for a living organ donor and the challenges associated with finding a viable match. The documentary includes footage from a San Francisco benefit that features performances from Nada Surf, Ben Gibbard and John Vanderslice. It premieres tonight, Tuesday November 10th, on the PBS series Independent Lens (check your local listings for time and channel). |
The David Bazan song, hard to be from curse your branches easily one of the best songs on an album filled with great songs is being featured as Song of the Day on NPR. You can listen to the song and read their review here. Bazan will also be on NPR's World Café this Thursday, October 15 you can listen live via the internet (between 2pm and 4pm EST) here, or find your local NPR radio station and listen the old-fashioned way.
Chris Walla was recently paired with J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines) for the NPR All Songs Considered piece called Project Song. The two artists, who had never met before, had two days to write and record a song based on themes and images provided by curator Bob Boilen, and the result is pretty phenomenal. It was announced today that Death Cab for Cutie's contribution to the Twilight series' New Moon will be the first single from the soundtrack album. The song, meet me on the equinox will premiere on September 13th at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Nathan from Cold War Kids and Ben from Death Cab for Cutie are running to raise money for the non-profit organization Water Wells for Africa. While their bands are on tour together during the month of April, the number of miles they run is being recorded in real time at www.runforwaterwells.com. Fans can follow along as they rack up miles, and are encouraged to donate $1 for every mile the guys run.
Water Wells For Africa is a grassroots non-profit that has installed over 100 water wells in drought regions of Malawi, Southern Africa, providing fresh drinking water to 150,000-200,000 Malawians per day. Their goal is to work toward installing 1,000 new wells in hopes to bring the same clean water to 2 million people in the region. |

The reissue of Death Cab’s classic 1998 debut album, something about airplanes, is out now. This limited 10-year anniversary deluxe edition includes a bonus disc featuring a recently-unearthed recording of the band’s first-ever Seattle show, a February 1998 set at the legendary venue The Crocodile Café. The reissue also features beautifully redesigned artwork, including extensive liner notes by noted musician and writer Sean Nelson (whose band Harvey Danger was the headliner of the bonus disc show, and who sings lead vocals on the DCfC set’s never-before-heard cover of The Smiths’ sweet and tender hooligan).

An all-star lineup of indie bands will be performing at the Manifest Hope Gallery on Wednesday, August 27th, during the Democratic National Convention in Denver, CO. The Manifest Hope Gallery, hosted by artist Shepard Fairey and MovOn.org, will be displaying works by artists who support Barack Obama, and on Wednesday night San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom will host Unconventional '08, with musical performances on an outdoor stage with Nada Surf, Silversun Pickups, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Cold War Kids and DJ Z Trip. Tickets are free, and will be available at the gallery.
In addition, there will be an intimate (and invite-only) songwriter-in-the-round performance, featuring Ben Gibbard of Death Cab, Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley, Zooey Deschanel of She And Him, Matthew Caws of Nada Surf, and Jonathan Rice. If you're not lucky enough to receive an invitation to this event, there will also be a public performance by Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla at the SEIU, HCAN, NEA and Progressive Allies Rally at 3pm on August 27th, in the Sunken Gardens Park. Entertainment Weekly has compiled their "100 Best Albums of the Last 25 Years", and Death Cab's 2003 release,
transatlanticism, has made the list. It's a diverse group of records, which will undoubtedly cause anguish to some because of the inclusion (or exclusion) of certain albums, but it's worth checking out (in the June 27th print version, or online here).

Death Cab for Cutie are putting the finishing touches on their next record, narrow stairs (due May 13 Barsuk will be releasing the vinyl version sometime after the CD comes out), and have posted an 8-minute album track to their MySpace page (you can also purchase the track from Amazon). We'll post more news about the new album as we get it.

The concept: gather together a bunch of bands in a house that will be destroyed. All bands play one song each, and perform their song twice, and then the house is destroyed. Capture everything on film, and release it on DVD.
For the Seattle edition, Death Cab's Ben Gibbard gathered together a bunch of great local bands: The Long Winters, Jesse Sykes, David Bazan, Harvey Danger, Tiny Vipers, The Cave Singers, Minus The Bear, Eddie Vedder, Kinski, Spook The Horse, The Can't See, The Blue Scholars, Triumph of Lethargy Skinned To Death, and, of course, himself.
