Menomena on Daytrotter [ 27 Oct 2008 ]

Late last year, Menomena performed their song rotten hell on a rooftop in Brooklyn for the Village Voice blog Possibly 4th Street. You can watch the video, and read the interview of Menomena's Brent Knopf, online here — it's quite a treat.

Record Store Day [ 16 Apr 2008 ]

On Saturday, April 19, independent music stores across the country will be taking part in the first annual Record Store Day, celebrating those wonderful and unique places where music fans can find satisfaction. Several of Barsuk's artists will be taking part in this event — be sure to check out your local record store to find out what events they have planned.

Here's where you can find our bands:

  • Aqueduct performance at Sonic Boom (Ballard) in Seattle, WA at 4pm
  • Mates of State performance at Newbury Comics (on Newbury Street) in Boston, MA at noon
  • Menomena foosball tournament at Jackpot Records (SW 9th) in Portland, OR from 1pm to 3pm — anyone who beats the band members at foosball will have their name put into a hat; at the end of the tournament, one lucky winner will win a special gift. The band will also be DJ'ing during the event.
  • Nada Surf performance at Vintage Vinyl in Fords, NJ 2:30pm
  • John Roderick (The Long Winters) DJ set at Sonic Boom (Capitol Hill) in Seattle, WA at 3pm
  • Jesse Sykes performance at Easy Street (Queen Anne) in Seattle, WA at 5pm

Menomena, John Vanderslice albums recognized by NPR, Grammys [ 05 Dec 2007 ]

As the Best of the Year lists come in (check out ours here), two Barsuk albums from 2007 are being recognized for their greatness. John Vanderslice's emerald city and Menomena's friend and foe are on the list of nominations for NPR's Year's Best Music (be sure to vote!), and the Grammy Foundation has nominated Menomena's album for Best Recording Package (for the awesomely-executed design by graphic novelist Craig Thompson). Congratulations to all!

2008 PLUG Independent Music Awards [ 26 Nov 2007 ]

The nominees for the 2008 PLUG Independent Music Awards have been announced, including several categories with Barsuk artists. Menomena are up for 3 awards: Video of the Year (for the food-crazed rotten hell video), Best Packaging of the Year (for the awesome Craig Thompson-created design of friend and foe), and Song of the Year (for wet & rusting). John Vanderslice is up for Male Artist of the Year, and the Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter album, like, love, lust & the open halls of the soul, is up for Best Americana Album of the Year. Menomena inspire the little ones [ 05 Sep 2007 ]

Menomena were recently in Paris, where they filmed a street performance of the song wet and rusting as a Take Away Show (Concert A Emporter), inspiring a couple of passing children to boogie down. Watch the performance here, and we dare you not to smile at the cuteness.

PF Flyers, makers of action shoes and apparel, will be hosting a new video for the Menomena song evil bee (from this year's friend and foe), directed and produced by Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner Stefan Nadelman. The video will be up on the PF Flyers website starting September 1st, but you can watch a trailer here

If you've been wondering when your favorite Barsuk band is going to be coming around to your neck of the woods again, wait no longer. A dizzying number of tour dates have just been announced, including Nada Surf's US tour in October, Menomena's third big tour of the year (this time with Illinois in October and November), David Bazan's epic journey (with support Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, September through November), Rocky Votolato (playing some dates with Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter) in September and October, John Vanderslice (celebrating his new album, emerald city) and Smoosh (supporting Bloc Party in September). Menomena video to debut on MTV's Subterranean [ 08 Jun 2007 ]

What happens when you combine sixteen restless kids, a cafeteria full of food, and a Menomena video? To find out, be sure to watch the world premiere of the new Menomena video (for the song rotten hell) on the Subterranean blog on June 15 — it'll also air on the TV show this Sunday (June 18).

Menomena announce US tour, picked as SPIN Band of the Day [ 19 Jan 2007 ]

Menomena have put together the first tour in support of their new release, friend and foe (out January 23). The tour begins in their hometown of Portland, OR, after which they make their way across the US and Canada. Tour dates can be found here.
