Viva Voce are back with rose city, an album they wrote, arranged, and recorded themselves all in one furious month — choosing not to deliberate over every little thing but living purely in the moment musically and lyrically. Immersing themselves in sonic experimentation, it was truly spontaneous and cathartic. The result is an angular, immediate record that pulses with the palpable urgency of a band yearning for a return to the vagabond life of the working, touring musician — a mode in which Viva Voce is truly at home.

Starting today, fans will be able to take an early listen to the forthcoming Viva Voce release, rose city, at the ABC News blog, Amplified. The album will be out a week from today, and the band will be starting their tour this coming weekend — tour dates can be found here.

In advance of the new record, Viva Voce is offering up an exclusive single at eMusic, featuring rose city stand-out octavio and a pair of new remixes for the track. The single will be available next Tuesday, April 28th, about a month before rose city drops on May 26th. The follow-up to the band's 2006 Barsuk Records debut, get yr blood sucked out, the new album is an angular, immediate record that pulses with palpable urgency.

Barsuk staff and many of our bands will down in Austin later this month for the annual SXSW music festival, playing parties, doing DJ sets, and having a good ol' Texas time. Our official showcase with Merge Records, March 21 at the Parish, will feature Ra Ra Riot, Say Hi, and The Wooden Birds, as well as Merge bands Telekinesis, Lou Barlow with Imaad Wasif, and The Rosebuds, and special guest DJ Jason Hammel from Mates of State spinning records between sets. Due to tour routing logistics, Viva Voce will have to hit the road before our showcase Saturday night, but they'll be down in Austin earlier in the week playing a few parties in their new four-piece lineup.

Release date is May 26. The band will be playing US dates in March and April, and touring extensivly after the album is released.

Viva Voce recently sent out a press release announcing the band's breakup ... which sent a chill through our hearts. They went on to announce that they had reformed, and added two members to their lineup, and were planning a US tour for March of this year (with stops at Austin's SXSW festival). We're thrilled, and especially excited about the fact that the band has been working on a new album (details of which will be announced in the coming weeks). Kevin and Anita are busy recording the next Viva Voce album, which by all reports is shaping up to be an amazing record. They've also been busy with their side project, Blue Giant, and will be playing 3 special shows in their hometown of Portland, Oregon, in the coming weeks. They'll be playing with a different supporting band each night, and they'll "graft" that band into Blue Giant for the evening. Check their website for all the details....

Zune-Arts.net is featuring several new artist collaborations on its site to promote Microsoft's Zune, and the most recent video (which is playing on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim this month) is set to special thing from get yr blood sucked out. The video, Dogfight, tells the tale of two enemy figther pilots and the crazy fireworks that result from their spectacular mid-air explosions.

The Shins will be taking Viva Voce on the road later this winter, in the midwest and west coast throughout the month of February. Dates and venue information can be found here. Anita will also be playing with the Shins on their Saturday Night Live and David Letterman performances, January 13 and 23, respectively.

The awesomely wicked video for the song from the devil himself will be airing on MTV2's new music show, Subterranean this coming Sunday night (Nov. 26) — be sure to check it out while you're recovering from the long weekend.
