Having spent half of the last decade on tour, away from home, David Bazan's new album reflects the wandering life of a traveling troubadour. And while there is joy in that life, Blanco is born of its challenges. It's what, and whom, he leaves at home that you hear on Blanco. Made up of tracks that were previously available in a very limited edition 7" vinyl series called Bazan Monthly, Volume 1 and Volume 2, Bazan turned to northwest indie-rock veteran Yuuki Matthews, who both co-produced Strange Negotiations and co-founded celebrated indie band Crystal Skulls, to help craft the endeavor. "I walked in thinking that we would have to scrap all the ideas I had as garbage once he heard them," says Bazan. "Instead he said these are great, let's get started." Over the next twelve months the pair would record over a dozen songs together, ten of which comprise Blanco.

While David Bazan's previous album was intensely personal, Strange Negotiations focuses his energies toward the external, centering on his disappointment in the current state of accelerating American and global social fragmentation. It is the first full-length Bazan has recorded with a band — the same band with which he toured relentlessly in support of Curse Your Branches — and the joy that he, Andy Fitts (bass), and Alex Westcoat (drums) take in playing these songs is beautiful.

It would be easy to understand, if you're only somewhat familiar with David Bazan's musical, theological, and philosophical backstory, why you might be tempted to shrug Curse Your Branches off either as another record by some Christian indie rocker, or as a declaration of atheism by some former Christian indie rocker.

Here is our request: Please do not do that.

Both of those dismissals are inaccurate, and neither gives any indication of the depth and breadth of Bazan's work. He's not an evangelist or a prodigal son, or any other cartoon character from the ecumenical funny papers. He's a songwriter, whose melodies and instrumental figures are every bit as eloquent as his lyrics. He is, we believe, a major talent who has already spent more than enough time in his successful career struggling to unshackle himself from the ideological expectations of his audience. More to the point, Curse Your Branches is his masterpiece — a beautiful, passionate, profoundly courageous work of art that deserves and will reward your close attention. It is a deeply personal, frankly autobiographical dispatch from the front lines of a crisis of faith. Song after song peers deep into the abyss of insoluble mysteries and comes up with something far more useful than answers.

Known for his work fronting the enigmatic rock band Pedro the Lion, David Bazan's emotionally charged narratives, eye for telling detail, and mournful voice have more in common with J.D. Salinger's "Nine Stories" or Flannery O'Connor's "Wise Blood" than with the usual lyrical slant of popular music. Bazan is a gifted storyteller, weaving parables of spiritual conflict, suburban ennui, and personal surrender into magnetic, well-crafted songs.

Bazan's solo debut EP Fewer Moving Parts finds the beloved Seattle songwriter roaring back to his creative roots, performing and recording everything himself in his home studio, while still expanding his sonic canvas. His signature songwriting, voice, and melodies are framed in layered harmonies, multi-tracked guitars, analog keyboards, and intricate production. The 10-track EP presents five new Bazan songs, each recorded in both stripped-down acoustic and full instrumentation forms.
