With a sound that veers from the acoustic simplicity and poetic lyricism of coffeehouse folk to the bouncy, lo-fi appeal of D.I.Y. indie pop, this California quartet writes melodies so damn catchy, you might almost think you've heard them before. Jenny Lewis (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Blake Sennet (guitar, vocals), Pierre de Reeder (bass) and Dave Rock (drums, later replaced by ex-Lassie Foundation member Jason Boesel) formed Rilo Kiley in 1998 in Los Angeles. Three years after its formation, the band released take offs and landings on Barsuk. Songs like go ahead and bulletproof showcase the band's most distinctive asset the sweet vocals and bittersweet lyrics of Lewis while the breezy hooks and driving beats of tunes like wires and waves and always show the band knows how to craft songs of undeniable infectiousness.
An all-star lineup of indie bands will be performing at the Manifest Hope Gallery on Wednesday, August 27th, during the Democratic National Convention in Denver, CO. The Manifest Hope Gallery, hosted by artist Shepard Fairey and MovOn.org, will be displaying works by artists who support Barack Obama, and on Wednesday night San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom will host Unconventional '08, with musical performances on an outdoor stage with Nada Surf, Silversun Pickups, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Cold War Kids and DJ Z Trip. Tickets are free, and will be available at the gallery.
In addition, there will be an intimate (and invite-only) songwriter-in-the-round performance, featuring Ben Gibbard of Death Cab, Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley, Zooey Deschanel of She And Him, Matthew Caws of Nada Surf, and Jonathan Rice. If you're not lucky enough to receive an invitation to this event, there will also be a public performance by Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla at the SEIU, HCAN, NEA and Progressive Allies Rally at 3pm on August 27th, in the Sunken Gardens Park. Other guests include Jim Hightower, Tom Hagerman, and Nick Urata of Devotchka. |
The Barsuk Records VINYL edition of the new Rilo Kiley record, more adventurous, which has an alternate version of the track a man/me/then jim, is now available in the shop.
